About
As you find it today, Penally Abbey is a true labour of love for the Boissevain family. Husband and wife team Lucas and Melanie Boissevain work closely with two of their three children, Saskia and Jacques to create this 12 bedrooms, boutique hotel and restaurant by the sea in Pembrokeshire.
Falling for the charming 18th Century property in 2014, they saw a definite niche for a small, intimate luxury hotel and top quality restaurant to serve Tenby and the beautiful surrounding area.
An interior designer by profession, it was Melanie's task to give the hotel's unique interior spaces and guest rooms an inspired new lease of life. Introducing cool, elegant lighting and colour schemes, helped by a wealth of character features and carefully selected furnishings.
The hotel is based around three fundamentals; warm, welcoming and friendly service, good food and wine and comfy bedrooms. The Boissevain's wanted Penally Abbey to feel like staying with family friends or in a large B&B.
The same could be said about the delightful historic grounds and hotel restaurant. Bringing a keen interest in local history and a love of great food, Lucas has dedicated himself to the task of putting Penally Abbey and its grounds firmly on the map as a different breed of hotel complementing the hotel's unique coastal surroundings and history.
The Penally Abbey Adventure
When Lucas and Melanie took on the hotel back in the summer of 2014, they had little experience in the industry and within the first six months learnt more about the hospitality industry than they ever imagined.
For the past seven years, the hotel has undergone extensive refurbishments. The renovations have included 12 redecorated bedrooms, 15 new bathrooms, a complete decoration overhaul of all the public areas, a new bar area, additional laundry block, a new excavated courtyard events space, a car park extension whilst also redesigning the kitchen and landscaping the garden. It is safe to say it has been a busy time but the original final vision of a relaxing space for guests was the driver throughout.
In 2016, Saskia joined the family business and took on the marketing, PR and events whilst Jacques helped us since 2017 after finishing a degree in graphic design to work on the photography and branding.
The fantasitc kitchen team and our brilliant front of house worked hard to achieve 2 AA rosettes and in February 2019 opened the hotel's new restaurant, Rhosyn. Rhosyn is a relaxed, beautiful dining space for locals, holidaymakers and hotel guests to enjoy the incredible local suppliers and ingredients Pembrokeshire has to offer.
In 2019, the restaurant was awarded a Good Plate award by the Michelin Guide and continued to receive the award in 2020 and 2021.
